Roy Hinkle

Roy V. Hinkle, 91, of Cape Girardeau died peacefully Sunday, June 10, 2012, at the Lutheran Home, where he was in hospice care after living at the facility the last two years.

He was born Nov. 10, 1920, in Cape Girardeau, son of Clarence and Naomi Hinkle. He and Marie Kaufman were married July 21, 1945, in Cape Girardeau.

Hinkle graduated from LaSalle University and Cape Girardeau Business College. He was an accountant at Missouri Utilities Co. (now Ameren Corp.) 37 years, retiring in 1983. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

He served in the Air Corps during World War II.

He was a member of American Legion since 1947. He was an avid supporter of Boy Scouts of America, serving more than 17 years (1958 to 1975), including 15 years as Scoutmaster, assistant Scoutmaster and committee chairman/member of Troop 5 sponsored by VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau. He received the prestigious Order of Merit Award in 1969.

Hinkle was a rock to his family and took care of his wife more than eight years before her death, including a four-year vigil with her while she was in a nursing home. He was able to bounce back from seemingly any obstacle, including nearly two years of kidney dialysis, and took it all (pretty much) in stride.

He will be sorely missed by his family and all who came in contact with him.

Survivors include three sons, Gary Hinkle (Mary Ann) of Fairfax, Va., Ricky Hinkle of St. Louis, Randy Hinkle (Jane) of Overland Park, Kan.; a sister, Evelyn Barker (Dwight) of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, Jennifer Hinkle of Fairfax, Ellen Hinkle of St. Louis, Patrick Hinkle (Elizabeth) of Houston, Peter Hinkle (Mallory) of Prairie Village, Kan.; a stepgrandchild, Callie Wyrsch of Overland Park; many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie K. Hinkle; three brothers, Marvin, Melvin and Howard Hinkle; and a sister, Helen Bowden.

Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

The funeral will be at noon Wednesday at the funeral home, with Tom Sullenger officiating. Entombment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.

The family wishes to thank the staff at the Lutheran Home/Assisted Living West facility for making his last two years as enjoyable as they could be. He thought of the place as his new home and considered the staff as his extended family. Thanks also to the doctors and staff at the dialysis center who made his treatments bearable and allowed him to be with us all these last two years.
