CAIRO, Ill. -- Rose Lucille Hughes, 83, of Scott City, formerly of Cairo, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girar-deau. She was born Aug. 28, 1920, at Cairo, daughter of the late Frank and Catherine Zettler Walder. She was married to Norman D. Hughes. He preceded her in death in 1994...

CAIRO, Ill. -- Rose Lucille Hughes, 83, of Scott City, formerly of Cairo, died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girar-deau.

She was born Aug. 28, 1920, at Cairo, daughter of the late Frank and Catherine Zettler Walder. She was married to Norman D. Hughes. He preceded her in death in 1994.

Hughes was the director of the Happy Days Senior Center in Cairo before retirement. She also ran a private catering service in Cairo. She was a member of St. Patricks Catholic Church in Cairo and attended Immaculate Conception in Jackson.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn Hughes and Nancy Joiner of Jackson and Adrienne Calvert of Metropolis, Ill.; two sons, Norman Ray Hughes of Scott City and Michael Hughes of Barlow, Ky.; a sister, Mary Catherine Carter of Decatur, Ill.; a brother, Robert Walder of Evansville, Ind.; 15 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two infant sons.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo. The Holy Rosary will be recited at the funeral chapel at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Fathers Jerome Fortenberry and Ed Eftink will officiate, with burial in the Calvary Cemetery at Villa Ridge, Ill.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Patricks Catholic Church in Cairo or Immaculate Conception School Fund in Jackson in memory of Mrs. Hughes.
