KLONDIKE, Ill. -- Roberta Hughes, 92, of Klondike died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at her home. She was born July 14, 1912, in Marvel, Ark., daughter of John and Dillie Woods Sowers. She married Garfield Hughes. Hughes was a member of New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, served in many auxiliaries, was superintendent of the Sunday school and was a member of the Mothers Board...

KLONDIKE, Ill. -- Roberta Hughes, 92, of Klondike died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, at her home.

She was born July 14, 1912, in Marvel, Ark., daughter of John and Dillie Woods Sowers. She married Garfield Hughes.

Hughes was a member of New Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, served in many auxiliaries, was superintendent of the Sunday school and was a member of the Mothers Board.

Survivors include two sons, Preston Hughes Sr. of Mound City, Ill., John Hughes of Elgin, Ill; three daughters, Minnie Womack of Elgin, Ill., Dillie Hughes of Mounds, Ill., Betty King of Villa Ridge, Ill.; 14 grandchildren, including Chauncey Hughes Sr. with whom she made her home; and 42 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, a sister and two children.

Friends may call at First Missionary Baptist Church in Mound City from 11 a.m. Saturday until time of service.

The funeral will be at noon Saturday at the church, with the Rev. James R. Dowell officiating. Burial will be in Spencer Heights Cemetery at Mounds.

Massie Funeral Home in Cairo is in charge of arrangements.
