MARBLE HILL, Mo. -- Robert Sylvester Summers, 72, of Marble Hill died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at his home.
He was born Feb. 14, 1929, at Richwood, Mo., son of Robert S. and Naomi G. Meyers Summers. He and Therese L. Clovis were married Nov. 1, 1947. She died Nov. 1, 1975. He later married Shannon M. Newell Feb. 14, 1999.
Summers retired as a lead deckhand with American Commercial Barge Lines. He attended Plainview Congregational Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert Summers of Marble Hill, Alphonse Summers of Leopold, Mo.; three daughters, Janet Smithers and Marilyn Summers of Cut Off, La., Jocelyn Doiron of Galliano, La.; a stepson, Kevin Burkhart of Fredericktown, Mo.; and a stepdaughter, Sherry Harman of Glen Allen, Mo.
Also surviving are three brothers, Homer Summers of state of Texas, Clifford and Floyd Summers of state of Illinois; two sisters, Juanita Young of Welge, Ill., Doris Summers of Tilden, Ill.; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, a daughter, a sister, and two grandchildren.
Friends may call at Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill from 9-11 a.m. Monday.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Eddie Long officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Chester, Ill.
