Robert J. "Bob" Manning, 87, of Jackson passed away Sunday, June 18, 2023, at his home.
He was born Aug. 21, 1935, in Bloomfield, Missouri, son of Albert and Maude Spangler Manning. He and Margaret M. "Peggy" Muegge were married Aug. 29, 1959, in St. Louis.
Bob grew up in St. Louis, graduating from Roosevelt High School in June 1953. He worked at Ralston Purina Co. in the shipping department, chemical laboratory and public relations department.
He volunteered for the military, serving in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve from Sept. 16, 1955, until he was honorably discharged Sept. 30, 1961. For the majority of his active service, he was stationed at The Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia, as an instructor for radio maintenance and repair.
In June 1962, he graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor's degree in business administration. Bob was a cartographer at Aeronautical Chart and Information Service in St. Louis, assisting in the preparation of aeronautical charts for the U.S. Air Force.
He was hired by Donald L. Harrison to manage accounting operations for his companies: Girardeau Contractors, Delta Asphalt, Southeast Missouri Stone Co., Southern Illinois Stone Co. and DLH Services. He established Colonial Business Services, providing accounting and income tax services for businesses and individuals. He owned and operated Record Data/SMS, which furnished real estate title insurance and real estate appraisals for lenders. Bob was a state-certified real estate appraiser.
He was a past member of Cape Girardeau Breakfast Optimist, Cape Kiwanis Club, Optimist Club of Jackson and Jackson Trail Riders. He was a member of Missouri Southeastern Model Railroad Club.
Loving survivors include his wife of 63 years, Margaret Manning, and a daughter, Linda Marie (Steven) Sebaugh, both of Jackson; and two grandchildren, Scott Sebaugh and Kate (Michael) Smith.
Bob was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Manning, and sister, Evelyn Strauss.
There will be a private family graveside service at a later date.
Arrangements are by McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
