Robert Eugene Jones Sr., 71, of Cape Girardeau passed away Thursday, May 10, 2018, at Southeast Hospital.
He was born July 7, 1946, in Oak Ridge, the son of Clint and Geraldine Whittaker Jones. He and Carolyn Sue Smith were married March 24, 1970, in Anna, Illinois. She passed away March 8, 2010.
Robert served in the U.S. Army from March 1966 to February 1968. Upon his honorable discharge, he went to work as a deckhand on the river, where he became a New Orleans Saints football fan. He also was an avid St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan. After his time on the river, Robert began a career in truck driving, starting with United Oil Co. and then with Jerry Lipps Trucking, followed by 40 years with Snappy Delivery.
Robert throughly enjoyed the outdoors and participating in sports with his children, spending hours playing baseball, football or basketball with his children and all of the other neighborhood kids. He also enjoyed bowling and was involved in bowling leagues for a number of years.
Loving survivors include four sons, Terry (Margaret) Webb of Piedmont, Missouri, Darren (Donna) Bullard of Marble Hill, Missouri, and Robert (Lisa) Jones and Thomas Lee Jones, both of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Kimberly (Doug) Hays of Cape Girardeau and Lisa Kay (Lawrence) Russell of Jackson; two brothers, Lynn (Betty) Jones and Roger (Carolyn) Jones, both of Jackson; a sister, Jerry (Gary) Ford of Poplar Bluff, Missouri; and two stepbrothers, Bill and Bob Hess. Also surviving are seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Carolyn; and a brother, Ronald.
Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday at Life Point Worship Center in Jackson.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Worship Center, with the Rev. John Ruedrich officiating.
