MOUNDS, Ill. -- Robert "Bob" Eugene Jones, 85, of Mounds passed away at 3:15 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 21, 2013, at Daystar Care Center in Cairo, Ill.
Bob was born Dec. 27, 1927, in Campbell, Mo., son of the late Tommy Jones and Florence Rich Jones.
Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran, a member of the Mounds United Methodist Church, member of the Pulaski County Memorial VFW Post 8891 of Mounds and attended Smiles 1 Senior Citizen Center in Mounds.
Bob's occupations included serving as police chief for the city of Mounds for several years. He was also a former switchman with the Illinois Central Railroad and was a retired executive director with the Pulaski County Housing Authority in Mounds.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Craig Jones, on April 13, 2013; a half sister, Christine Rutz; and a half brother, John Kelley.
Survivors include a daughter, Marylyn Jones Pirtle and her husband, Dan Pirtle, of Champaign, Ill.; two granddaughters, Kate Pirtle DeLeon (John DeLeon) and Amy Pirtle Carey (James Carey); a great-grandson, Ronin DeLeon; and three half sisters, Marilyn Mosley and Violet Simmons of Pickens, S.C., and Lois Cedre of Chicago.
Graveside memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mound City National Cemetery in Mound City, Ill., with the Rev. Doug Atkins officiating. Full military honors are to follow by the members of the Illinois National Guard Burial Team and area veterans. Interment will be in the Mound City National Cemetery.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery Tuesday before service time.
