Robert Herd Sr.

Robert A. Herd Sr., 77, of Cape Girardeau died Wednesday, May 22, 2013, at Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter.

He was born May 31, 1935, in Springfield, Mo., to John Earl and Jeanetta Mae (Thomas) Herd.

Robert served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. His military career spanned 28 years and his jobs included operations sergeant, intelligence sergeant, communications sergeant and food service sergeant.

He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 28 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 63, VFW Post 3838, governor of the Moose Lodge in Santa Maria, Calif., president of the Eagles in California and commissioner with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 35 years in California and Missouri. He enjoyed building model railroads and spending time with his family.

Survivors include three children, Cynthia Cruse of Jackson and Robert Herd Jr. and Donald Lee Herd of Atascadero, Calif.; a brother, Charles "Mickey" Herd of Los Angeles; a sister, Shirley Nixon of Florida; and three grandchildren, Dawn and Tiffany Herd of Atascadero and Kristina Cruse of Jackson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Herd, who died Feb. 20, 2013, and a son, Steven Herd.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, with the Rev. Donny Ford officiating.
