Richard Lee "Dick" Wood, 83, of Jackson passed away Tuesday, June 22, 2021, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Nov. 1, 1937, in Cape Girardeau to Sewell and Daisy Macke Wood. He and Brenda Mayfield were married June 29, 1963, in Morley, Missouri.
Dick was a lifelong resident of Jackson and a 1956 graduate of Jackson High School. He honorably served more than 22 years in the Missouri National Guard, retiring Nov. 1, 1997, as a major.
Dick was a lifelong construction worker, retiring in 2005 from Penzel Construction Company as a construction superintendent.
He was a longtime member of Shawnee Hills Baptist Church in Jackson. Dick wholeheartedly trusted in the power of prayer and was honored to pray for or with anyone.
Dick was an avid outdoors man, and through the years, he enjoyed the company of several special canine companions. He was the last surviving founding member of the Cape County Gun Club.
When inclement weather kept Dick from being outside, he was content to work for hours in his woodworking shop. He was always on the hunt for unique wood from which to craft things. The past several years, he especially enjoyed making wood bowls and sharing them with his friends.
Loving survivors include his wife of nearly 58 years, Brenda Wood of Jackson; three children, Laura (Brian) Blankenship of Jackson; Kent Wood of Louisville, Kentucky, and Ellen Wood of Jackson; a special granddaughter, Danielle; and a sister-in-law, Estelee Wood of Jackson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin brother, Mike Wood; and a sister, Betty (Harold) Landgraf.
To honor Dick, a private service was held Friday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson, with the Rev. Jim Matthews officiating. Military honors were performed at the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery in Bloomfield, where Dick was laid to rest.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to Shawnee Hills Baptist Church or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
