CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Richard L. Sutherland, 76, of Charleston died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. He was born on April 23, 1925, in Charleston, son of Frank Russell and Margaret Adeline Farmer Sutherland. He and Louise Blaylock were married Sept. 22, 1949...

CHARLESTON, Mo. -- Richard L. Sutherland, 76, of Charleston died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau.

He was born on April 23, 1925, in Charleston, son of Frank Russell and Margaret Adeline Farmer Sutherland.

He and Louise Blaylock were married Sept. 22, 1949.

He had lived his entire life in Charleston, where he was a supervisor with the U.S. Post Office until he retired in 1981. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army and a retired colonel with the Army National Guard, having served as commander for the first battalion of the 140th Infantry for a number of years. He was also a member of VFW Post #4294 and the American Legion.

He was appointed by the Charleston City Council to the Planning and Zoning Commission, served as scout master for the Boy Scouts of America troop sponsored by the National Guard for many years and was a member of the Masonic Lodge #407 AF and AM.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Richard Sutherland Jr., of Jacksonville, Ark., and Kent Sutherland of North Little Rock, Ark.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Charleston, with the Rev. Gerald Collier officiating.

McMikle Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
