The Rev. Dr. Neil Stein, 65, of Asheboro, N.C., died Saturday, July 22, 2000, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C.
Stein was pastor at Centenary United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau from November 1985 to September 1997.
He was born Aug. 27, 1934, in Malcolm, Neb., son of Leonard and Mildred Deal Stein. He married Carolyn Cagle, who died May 7, 1998.
Stein was a graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan University and St. Paul Theological Seminary. He received an honorary doctorate from Central Methodist College.
He served as a United Methodist minister in the Missouri East Conference 36 years. He was a member of World Methodist Council and the General Board of Church and Society. He retired in 1997 and moved to Asheboro.
Survivors include two sons, the Rev. John C. Stein of Cherryville, N.C., Thomas C. Stein of St. Charles, Mo.; a daughter, Catherine C. Stein of Graham, N.C.; and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Asheboro. The Rev. Boyd Stokes and the Rev. Bret Cogan will officiate.
Friends may call at the church after the service.
