PERRYVILLE -- The Rev. Joseph S. Flanga, 70, of Perryville, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 1994, at Perry County Memorial Hospital.

He was born Oct. 10, 1923, in New Orleans, La., son of Joseph and Catherine Sartalamachhia Flanga.

Flanga retired in 1988 at St. Mary's Seminary.

He took his vows May 31, 1940, at St. Mary's Seminary, was ordained in Rome, Italy, April 2, 1949, and received a doctorate of sacred theology in Rome in 1949.

Flanga taught theology at Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis, and was director five years at the Religious Information Bureau in St. Louis.

He served as director of students at St. John's Seminary in Camarillo, Calif., and served as rector of DeAndreis in Lamotte, Ill. For 10 years he was founding provincial of Providence of the West Vincentian Fathers and Brothers, and was also archivist for the province.

Survivors include two brothers, Rev. Anthony Flanga of Cape Girardeau, Emile Flanga of New Orleans; two sisters, Helen Mutter of Kennon, La., and Catherine Dunne of Lafayette, La.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's of the Barrens. The Revs. Anthony Flanga and Arthur Lee Trapp will officiate, with burial in Vincentian Cemetery.

Friends may call at Miller Family Funeral Home after 5 p.m. today. A wake will be held at 7:30.
