The Rev. Jerry D. Statler, 91, of Cape Girardeau passed away Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2023, at Lutheran Home.
He was born Sept. 25, 1931, in Sedgewickville, Missouri, son of Lloyd and Marie Hahs Statler. He and Elizabeth "Betty" Sander were married Sept. 4, 1953, in Cape Girardeau. She preceded him in death Nov. 25, 1999. He and Mary Jane Bryant were married April 14, 2001. She survives.
Jerry was a 1949 graduate of Cape Girardeau Central High School. During this time, while attending Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau, the Lord called him into the ministry. He was a 1953 graduate of Central Methodist College and a 1960 graduate of Eden Theological Seminary. He was then ordained into the United Methodist Church.
He served many churches in the Missouri conference. He also served on many boards for the United Methodist Church. After retirement in 1992, he volunteered in various capacities, including Stephen Ministry, American Bible Society, Emmaus and mission trips to Appalachia.
In addition to his loving wife, Jerry is survived by four children, Beverly (Brent) Stewart of St. Louis, Mark (Jennifer) Statler of Eugene, Missouri, Thomas (Jennifer) Statler of Kansas City, Missouri, and Stephen Statler of Cape Girardeau; nine grandchildren, Tommy (Liz) Statler of Medford, Oregon, Craig (Kaylee) Stewart, Emma Stewart and Deanna Statler, all of St. Louis, Bethany Statler of O'Fallon, Missouri, Caroline (Ben) Williams of Des Moines, Iowa, Jonathan Statler of Cape Girardeau, Andrew Statler of Columbia, Missouri, and Macie Statler of Eugene; and a brother, Gene (Sherry) Statler of Sebring, Florida.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Betty; and brother, Don Statler.
Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, at the church, with the Rev. Dr. Jame Hahs officiating. Burial will follow in Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery in Gordonville.
Memorials may take the form of contributions to the Grace United Methodist Church.
