ST. CHAR-LES, Mo. — The Rev. J.C. Montgomery Jr., 98, of St. Charles passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, 2017, at Windsor Estates Nursing Home.
Loving husband of the late Mary Leslie Montgomery and the late Vera Jones-Montgomery. Dear father and father-in-law of the late John and the late Judy Montgomery of Atlanta, Leslie and Mark Baumgartner of San Diego and Finley and Susan Montgomery of Eden Prairie, Minnesota. Proud grandfather of Timothy and Matthew Montgomery, Jenna Baumgartner, Sean and Cody Montgomery; and proud great-grandfather of Elizabeth.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Mrs. Marianna Niblack of Jefferson City, Missouri, and survived by his sister, Dr. Mathilde Najjar of Nashville, Tennessee.
He was born Oct. 13, 1918, in Herculaneum, Missouri.
Dr. Montgomery was a well-known retired pastor and district superintendent in Missouri United Methodism, as well as being active in national church affairs. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Army from 1941 to 1945. Active in Masonic work, he was a past grand master of the Grand Lodge of Missouri (1978 to 1979) and a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason. He is the former editor of The Missouri Freemason and The Royal Arch Mason magazines and a contributor to five books dealing with Masonic research.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Schrader Funeral Home and Crematory, 14960 Manchester Road at Holloway Road in Ballwin, Missouri. A Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m. by Grand Lodge officers under the auspices of the Grand Lodge of Missouri.
The funeral service at will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church of Green Trails, 14237 Ladue Road in Chesterfield, Missouri. Interment will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery in East Prairie, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Montgomery-Masonic Scholarship, c/o Southeast Missouri University Foundation, One University Plaza, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701, would be most appreciated. This fund has helped students for over 30 years.
