The Rev. Herbert R. Tate, 97, of Kirksville, died Monday, April 4, 1994, at Hannibal Regional Hospital.
He was a former pastor of Hobbs Chapel United Methodist Church, and curator of Old McKendree Chapel near Jackson.
He was born April 24, 1896, in Centralia, Ill., son of Charles William and Roselee Sweckard Tate. He and Gladys Marie Brown were married Nov. 2, 1916, in Mt. Vernon, Ill. She died Aug. 7, 1982.
Tate was licensed to preach in 1915, and was ordained a deacon in 1920 in Dix, Ill. He attended Asbury College in Wilmore, Ky., and received a call to the mission field of the Northwest Conference. He served in Butte, Mont.; Corvallis and Peoria, Ore.
Tate returned to Missouri in 1926 and served in many churches across the state. He retired from Missouri East Conference in 1965, and accepted the post as curator at Old McKendree and the pastorate at Hobbs.
The Tates moved to Kirksville in 1974 and were active in First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Juanita Rampy of Hannibal, Frances Norman of Lancaster; two sisters, Louvena Tucker of Dix, Olive Harris of Odin, Ill.; eight grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sons, two daughters and a brother.
Friends may call at Davis-Playle Funeral Home in Kirksville from 7-8 p.m. today.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Arni Memorial Cemetery at Lancaster.
