Raymond W. Burneson, 71, of Mt. Prospect, Ill., a former instructor at Southeast Missouri State University, died Wednesday, Aug. 5, 1992, at Lutheran General Hospital.

He was born June 16, 1921, in St. Louis. He and the former Gloria D. Havelka were married June 19, 1947, in Cape Girardeau.

Burneson received a bachelor's degree from Southeast University, and master's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He was past exalted ruler of Elks 639 here, and was active in community theater.

He was assistant safety director with Automobile Club of Missouri (AAA) from 1960-66. He was a traffic safety specialist with National Safety Council in Chicago from 1966-86.

Burneson was co-founder of American Driver Safety Education Association and Missouri Driver Safety Education Association. He had published numerous articles and texts on driver safety.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, John, william and Paul Burneson; a brother, J. Harold Burneson; two grandchildren, and stepmother, Viola Burneson.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights, Ill. Entombment will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Lauterburg and Oehler Funeral Home in Arlington Heights is in charge of arrangements.
