WHITEWATER, Mo. -- Raymond W. Abernathy, 74, of Whitewater died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau. He was born Dec. 10, 1926, at Benton, Mo., son of Harry J. and Gladys M. Campbell Abernathy. He and Martha E. Welker were united in marriage Aug. 16, 1951...

WHITEWATER, Mo. -- Raymond W. Abernathy, 74, of Whitewater died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.

He was born Dec. 10, 1926, at Benton, Mo., son of Harry J. and Gladys M. Campbell Abernathy. He and Martha E. Welker were united in marriage Aug. 16, 1951.

Abernathy was a maintenance worker with Little River Drainage District 26 years.

He was a member of Bethlehem General Baptist Church and its church board, and he loved to go hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Elvis (Judy) Abernathy of Chaffee, Mo., Doyle Abernathy of Whitewater, Leonard "Len" (Suzy) Abernathy of Riverton, Wyo., Carl Abernathy of Miami Shores, Fla.; a daughter, Mavis (John) Cunningham of Tipton, Mo.; two brothers, Lentice Abernathy of Whitewater, Gene Abernathy of Gentry, Ark.; two sisters, Olline Brown of Jackson, Mo., Loudean Case of Doe Run, Mo.; six grandchildren, Christopher (Michelle) Abernathy of Columbia, Mo., Matthew (Anna) Abernathy of St. Louis, DeWayne and Robert Cunningham of Tipton, Jeremiah and Ellie Boyd of Riverton, and Benjamin Abernathy of Columbia.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

Friends may call at Liley Funeral Home in Marble Hill from 3-7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 6.

Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The Rev. Joe Allen and the Rev. Jimmie Fullbright will officiate.

Burial will be in Plainview Cemetery.
