JACKSON -- Ray Vangilder, 69, of Jackson, died Tuesday, May 7, 1991, at St. Francis Medical Center.
He was born June 10, 1921, in Jackson, son of Ed and Grace Johnson Vangilder. He and the former Doris Ludwig were married Nov. 29, 1941.
Vangilder was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone from 1945-83. He was a member of VFW Post 3838 in Cape Girardeau, American Legion in Jackson, NRA, Telephone Pioneers, New McKendree United Methodist Church and its Fellowship Sunday School Class and Men's Club.
He was an honorary life member of Communication Workers of America. Vangilder served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ed Vangilder of Pocahontas; a daughter, Cindy Vangilder of San Francisco, Calif.; a brother, Jim Vangilder of Cape Girardeau; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Jessica Vangilder.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and an infant sister.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at McCombs Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Otto Steinhaus will officiate, with burial in Russell Heights Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-8 p.m. today. An American Legion honor guard service will be held at 7:30.
