JONESBORO, Ill. -- Ray Cavaness, 88, formerly of Jonesboro, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006, at Pinckneyville Healthcare Center.

He was born May 19, 1918, in Jonesboro, son of Ed and Ester Penrod Cavaness. He and Lois Irene Bridges were married in 1941 in Jackson. She preceded him in death.

Cavaness was a farmer, and retired after 13 years service with Illinois Department of Corrections.

Survivors include six sons, Wayman Cavaness of Pinckneyville, Richard Cavaness of Colorado Springs, Colo., Billy Cavaness of Algonquin, Ill., Jimmy Cavaness of Kinsman, Ill., Ernest Cavaness of Verona, Ill., Walter Cavaness of Cobden, Ill.; a daughter, Mary Cavaness of Cobden; a sister, Doris Beggs of Marion, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Hileman Funeral Home, with the Rev. Randy Wheaton officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Allen Cemetery in Ransom, Ill.
