Phoebe S. Rowe, 96, formerly of Sikeston, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 1996, at Southeast Missouri Hospital. She was born April 23, 1899, at Washington, daughter of Jesse H. and Jessie Martin Schaper. She and Burt H. Rowe Sr. were married Dec. 28, 1926. He preceded her in death March 3, 1969...

Phoebe S. Rowe, 96, formerly of Sikeston, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 1996, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

She was born April 23, 1899, at Washington, daughter of Jesse H. and Jessie Martin Schaper. She and Burt H. Rowe Sr. were married Dec. 28, 1926. He preceded her in death March 3, 1969.

Rowe graduated with honors from Oberlin College In Oberlin, Ohio, in 1922. She taught English and social studies at Sikeston High School, Bridges High School in Charleston and in the Maplewood and California districts. She was the first director of the Sikeston Head Start Program and helped organize the Halloween Unicef Program in Sikeston.

She was a gray lady volunteer at the Missouri Delta Medical Center from 1950 until 1967. In 1968, she received the "Woman of the Year" award given by the Sikeston Business and Professional Women's Club. From 1952 until 1979, she was a member of the Delta Community Concert Association in Sikeston. She also was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Cape Girardeau and had been a resident at Chateau Girardeau since 1979.

Survivors include three sons, George Parker Rowe of Lincoln, Neb., Burt H. Rowe Jr. of Sikeston and David M. Rowe of Hillsboro, Ill.; a sister, Jesse Long Satterfield of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, two brothers and two sisters.

Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. today at Nunnelee Funeral Chapel in Sikeston, where funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Charles E. Buck will officiate, with burial in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Charleston.
