Former Central High School football coach Howard Payne Muir, 88, of Columbia died Sunday, Nov. 2, 1997, at Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico.
He was born July 28, 1909, in Calloway County, son of George and Aubrey Gilbert Muir. He and Dubby Derr were married Sept. 16, 1935, at Caledonia.
Muir was a 1929 graduate of Jefferson City High School, received a degree from Northeast Missouri State University, and a master's degree from the University of Missouri.
He coached and taught 36 years at Missouri schools in Caledonia, LaPlata, Richmond, Mexico, and Cape Girardeau. He was coach at Central High School from 1951 until retiring in 1971, and was director of athletics a few years. He was inducted into Northeast University Hall of Fame in 1989.
A lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, Muir was a veteran of World War II. He also served 20 years in the reserves.
He is survived by his wife.
A memorial service was held Nov. 7 at Lenoir Chapel in Columbia, with the Rev. John Yonker officiating.
