Norman Spitzmiller

SIKESTON, Mo. -- Norman L. Spitzmiller, 84, of Sikeston died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2010, at his home.

He was born Jan. 18, 1926, in Ironton, Mo., to the late Jacob Henry and Rosa Ellen Crocker Spitzmiller. He and Betty Jo Cox were married Dec. 26, 1948, in Ironton.

Spitzmiller was a CPA and senior partner with Spitzmiller, Bridger & Co., and a member of First United Methodist Church.

He graduated from Ironton High School in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was a corporal in the signal corps from 1943 to 1945.

He graduated from Southeast Missouri State University in 1948 and was captain of the university tennis team.

Spitzmiller taught English at Ironton High School from 1948 to 1952, when he came to Sikeston and worked for Berry, Patmor and Day. He became a CPA in 1958 and in 1964 he formed Day, Spitzmiller and Sisk, which later became Spitzmiller, Hobbs and Clay.

He was involved with a number of community organizations through the years.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Gene Spitzmiller of Sikeston; four daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Gary Gunn and Linda and Danny Bridger of Sikeston, Elizabeth and Neil Corbett of Orlando, Fla., Ellen and Jim Wiss of Vail, Colo.; a sister, Adele Townsend of Cape Girardeau; and a granddaughter, Aria Webber, a student at Clemson University in South Carolina.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Paul, Walter, Bob, Ermal and Ralph Spitzmiller.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to service time Friday at First United Methodist Church.

The service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the church, with the Rev. Geoff Posegate, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
