CAIRO, Ill. -- Nell Markovich, 92, of Cairo, formerly of Llano, Texas, died at 7:45 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, at Daystar Nursing and Rehab in Cairo. She was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Willow City, Texas, the daughter of Claude Augustus and Lily Luanner Robbins Waugh. She married John Markovich on Sept. 3, 1944. CAIRO, Ill. -- Nell Markovich, 92, of Cairo, formerly of Llano, Texas, died at 7:45 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, at Daystar Nursing and Rehab in Cairo.

She was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Willow City, Texas, the daughter of Claude Augustus and Lily Luanner Robbins Waugh. She married John Markovich on Sept. 3, 1944. He preceded her in death Sept. 12, 1973.

Nell was a graduate of Llano Texas High School in 1942. She was a proud Yellow Jacket, having played on the volleyball team.

She retired from Mid-South Towing Co., where she worked as a cook on the "Girlie Knight." Nell was a beloved bingo player, enjoyed bowling and was an avid Cardinals fan. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary in Cairo.

She is survived by her daughter, Pat (Mike) Brey of Cairo; son-in-law, Arland Vaughn of Paducah, Kentucky; grandchildren, Mike (Elizabeth) Brey Jr. of Godfrey, Illinois, Erica (Billy) Lane of Knotts Island, North Carolina, Rico (Amanda) Aranico of Cairo, John (Christy) Brey of Jackson, Dr. Tiffany Brey of Scott City and Brittany (David) Essex of Villa Ridge, Illinois; 12 great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Nell was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Paulette Vaughn; and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Crain Funeral Home in Cairo.

Graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Green Lawn Memorial Gardens at Villa Ridge, with the Rev. Buddy Walls officiating. Friends are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Interment will be in Green Lawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Cairo Public Library and will be accepted at the funeral home.
