MOREHOUSE -- Funeral service for Murrel Newton of Morehouse will be held at 2 p.m. today at Morehouse General Baptist Church. The Rev. Randy Thomas will officiate, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery at Sikeston.
Watkins and Sons Funeral Home at Morehouse is in charge of arrangements.
Newton, 84, died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston.
He was born Sept. 2, 1913, at Salcedo, son of Lester Edward and Goldie Fansler Newton. He and Cora Victoria Smithpeters were married Nov. 24, 1934. She died Aug. 11, 1992.
Newton lived at Morehouse most of his life, and was a member of Morehouse General Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Murlene Fulkerson of Olive Branch, Miss.; a brother, Wayne Newton of Morehouse; a sister, Ulah Pitts of Morehouse; four grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, a brother, and a sister.
