Morris Van Winkle, 79, of Cape Girardeau passed away Sunday, March 20, 2016, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Sunday, March 14, 1937, in Chalmers, Illinois, to Moses E. and Ella M. (Johnson) Van Winkle.
He married Marjorie Lumley on Feb. 5, 1955. They celebrated 53 years of marriage before Marjorie passed July 8, 2008.
Morris owned and worked a farm in Bynumville, Missouri, for a number of years.
He began a full-time career in the Soil Conservation Service at Lutesville, Missouri, in 1975. He later moved to the Jackson office before retiring in December 2001.
Morris thoroughly enjoyed retirement, and he and Margie traveled all over the United States. They sent postcards to family and friends detailing their adventures in Branson, Missouri; Yellowstone; Myrtle Beach; and others. Morris was a member of Mount Auburn Christian Church for over 40 years and served as an elder for most of that time.
Morris is survived by two daughters, Sandra Conklin (Pat) and Cindy Rouggly (Mike); sisters, Wilma Moore and Barbara Ogle of Quincy, Illinois; sisters-in-law, Lois Ann Parrish of LaBelle, Missouri, and Connie Hellenthal of Keokuk, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was the proud grandfather of Chrissie (Ricardo) Coelho De Souza, Andy (Amy) Conklin, Sara Conklin,
Josh (Ashley) Conklin, Lucas (Alana) Rouggly, Jared (Heather) Rouggly, Elysia (Derek) King, Benjamin Rouggly, Bethany (Blake) Fields and Kenneth (Amber) Van Winkle. Great-grandchildren include Abigail, Paige and Crawford Conklin; Daniel Coelho De Souza; Adeline, Cordelia, Isaiah and Charlotte Rouggly; Olivia, Ezra and Cyrus Rouggly; and another great-grandchild on the way in October.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Robert; sisters, Neva Niffen and Lola Cunningham; brother-in-law, Bob Lumley.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Auburn Christian Church, with Pastor Casey Elmore officiating.
Burial will be at Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.
