CAIRO, Ill. -- Morris G. Morehead, 80, of Cairo died Friday, Sept. 17, 2004, at Saint Francis Medical Center.

He was born July 11, 1924, in Mound City, Ill., son of Otho and Alberta Smithy Morehead. He and Elyvon Morehead were married. She died July 2, 2004.

He was a retired ironworker and served in the U.S. Navy in World War II. Morehead was past commander and quartermaster of Cairo VFW Post 2649, a member of VFW Post 8891 at Mounds, Ill., Cairo Masonic Lodge 237 AF&AM, Cairo Chapter 71 Royal Arch Masons, Fort Massac Council 127 Royal and Select Masters, Cairo Commandery 13 Knights Templar, KIM Shrine Club and Ainad Shrine Temple and Iron Workers Local 782 in Paducah, Ky.

Survivors include two daughters, Morrissa Clanahan of Scott City, Ouida Haralambidis of Olive Branch, Ill.; a stepdaughter, Susan Hafford Brown of Carterville, Ill.; two stepsons, James Malone of Nampa, Idaho, John Hafford of Carterville; two sisters, Anita Heater of East Alton, Ill., Joyce Hagerman of Bethalto, Ill.; and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a grandson and a stepson.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. Monday at Barkett Funeral Home in Cairo. Masonic rites will be at 7:30 p.m.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with Revs. Verlee Eaker and Kelly Cox officiating. Burial will follow in Mound City National Cemetery, with military honors by VFW Post 8891 and the U.S. Navy.
