LILBOURN, Mo. -- Funeral for Vermont Samuel "Monte" Johnson of Lilbourn will be held at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church. Chaplain Jeffrey Militti and the Rev. Don Stephens will officiate. Burial will be in Mounds Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by New Madrid American Legion Post 595.

Johnson, 78, died Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2000, at Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston, Mo.

He was born Aug. 3, 1922, at Lilbourn, son of Edd W. and Susan Barnes Johnson. He and Annette Hill were married June 22, 1960.

Johnson was city marshal of Lilbourn from May 1960 to June 1965. He was a special agent with Missouri Department of Liquor Control from July 1965 until retiring in December 1989. He also served several terms as New Madrid County Democratic committeeman.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, served as a Sunday School teacher, chairman of the Board of Trustees, and church council member until 1998. He was a member and past commander of New Madrid County Memorial VFW Post 7183.

Johnson served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Monica May and Pam Riley of Lilbourn; four brothers, Elmo Johnson of Portageville, Mo., Grey and Charles "Chug" Johnson of Lilbourn, Bill Johnson of Kansas City, Mo.; two sisters, Lorene Looney of Sikeston, Susan Tatum of Jackson, Mo.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
