BERNIE -- Mitchell Beane, 72, of Bernie died Sunday, Feb. 14, 1999, at Dexter Memorial Hospital in Dexter.

He was born Feb. 22, 1926, in Tupelo, Miss., son of Sardis and Beatrice Clark Beane. He and Ophelia Johnson were married Oct. 4, 1952, in Piggott, Ark.

Beane farmed many years, and also was a butcher at Hester's Meat Packing Co. He was a member and served as a deacon of First Baptist Church in Catron.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Lawrence Beane of Houston, Texas, Terry and Jimmy Beane of South Bend, Ind., Anthony Beane of Cape Girardeau, Steve Beane of New Madrid; six daughters, Glendale O'Neal of LaPorte, Ind., Dorothy Austin of Houston, Patricia Beane of Bernie, Bobbie and Deloris Davis and Angela Beane, all of South Bend.

Also surviving are four nieces raised by Beane, Gena McKiney and Valeria Wheeler of Kennett, Vanessa and Debra Wheeler of South Bend; a brother, James Beane of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a sister, Willie Walker of Cape Girardeau; 30 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, a brother, and three sisters.

Friends may call at Rainey Funeral Home in Bernie from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, and Friday at First Baptist Church in Catron from 11 a.m. until service time.

Funeral will be at noon Friday at the church, with the Rev. Lawrence Beane officiating. Burial will be in Simmons Park Cemetery at Catron.
