Michael “Mike” Eugene Sides, 79, of Jackson passed away Monday, July 22, 2024, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Sept. 6, 1944, in Cape Girardeau, the son of Clyde Hansel and Winifred Golden Sides. He and Margaret Marie Clayton were married on Oct. 16, 1966. She passed away Nov. 21, 2017.
Mike was a 1964 graduate of Jackson High School. He joined the U.S. Navy on June 23, 1964. He served four years of active duty and two years of inactive duty during the Vietnam War.
After serving, Mike went to work for a veterinarian and went to school at a vocational-technical school for refrigeration and air conditioning, blueprint reading, applied electricity and auto mechanics auto elect during 1969-1972. He worked for Lohman Supply Co. for 20 years and then Hobart Co. for 24 years. He and his wife, Margaret, worked at Country Mart together for a few years.
Mike enjoyed hunting, fishing, bowling and playing cards, and going to the casino was his latest hobby. He was always doing something for others and never complained about anything. He liked country and gospel music and his old favorite back in the day, “Wooly Bully”.
Loving survivors include his daughter, Sherri (Keith) Mayfield of Jackson; two grandsons, Blake (Macie) Mayfield of Jackson, and their children, Kaydon, Mya, Kole and Ty; and Cody (Brittany) Mayfield of Jackson, and their children, Jaci and Kyson; brother, Kenny (Dorothy) Sides of Oak Ridge; sister, Lesa (Wayne) Brotherton of Millersville; half brother, Roger Stone; daughter-in-law, Kim Sides of Jackson; stepgranddaughter, Ashley (Michael) Newell; and great-grandsons, Gabe, Gavin and Anakin.
Mike was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Sides; parents, Clyde and Winifred Sides; in-laws, Hubert and Ruby Clayton; son, Chad Sides; and three sisters, DeAnna Meehan, the Rev. Janet (Terry) Hopkins and Sheila (Ron, who survives) Hecht.
Visitation will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.
The Rev. Donny Ford will conduct the memorial service at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at the funeral home, with military honors to follow. Graveside committal will be in Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.
The family suggests contributions be made to the Missouri Veterans Home.
