James Michael "Mike" Sciortino, 81, formerly of Cape Girardeau, met his heavenly Father on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Jackson Manor Nursing Home in Jackson.
He was born Nov. 27, 1942, in Cape Girardeau to Joseph John and Gladys Sutton Sciortino.
He and Lana Marie Brewer were married July 11, 1965, in New Madrid. She preceded him in death Aug. 18, 2015.
He graduated from Cape Catholic High School in Cape Girardeau in 1960. Following graduation, he attended the St. Louis School of Barbering and worked as a barber for several years before going to work for American Greeting Card Co. It was there that Mike learned how to engrave, which became both a passion and a gift throughout his life. He was most proud of his engraving of The Last Supper and his praying hands. It brought him so much joy to share copies of his work with others, and he continued this hobby until much later in life.
Mike worked for Procter & Gamble for 30 years before retiring in the late ‘90s. Following his retirement, he worked for Cape Toyota driving the courtesy shuttle, where he enjoyed meeting new people each day.
Mike saw a large gap in support and services for children with autism after his grandson was diagnosed 22 years ago. With limited knowledge on the subject, he educated himself by speaking with anyone he could find. He poured his heart into trying to create a community of parents, educators and officials to diagnose and provide treatment locally to those in need. He also helped start Sensory Saturday at the movie theater, which allowed individuals with special needs to enjoy movies in a comfortable environment.
Survivors include two daughters, Leighanne (Dale) Collier of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and Susan (Brent) Pfeiffer of Cape Girardeau; sister, Jane (Jerry) Meesey of Colorado; grandsons, Ethan Collier and Johnathan Pfeiffer; and granddaughter, Graysen Marie Pfeiffer.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and two sisters, Mary Susan Kinder and Jo Ann Schnur.
Friends may call from 3 to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Memorial service will follow at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Gerald Collier officiating. Interment will be at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum in Cape Girardeau at a later time.
Memorial contributions may be given to ALS Association.
The family wishes to thank Jackson Manor and its wonderful staff for truly making it his home. The community of friends, residents and caregivers always made him feel loved and cared for.
