Michael Wendell Carlton, 50, of Cape Girardeau died Friday, Feb. 16, 1996, at St. Louis University Hospital in St. Louis.

He was born Aug. 9, 1945, at Cape Girardeau, son of Lloyd and Juanita Johnson Carlton. He and Cheri Cauble were married Feb. 25, 1972, at Cape Girardeau.

Carlton was a captain in the Cape Girardeau Fire Department for 22 years. He joined the department Dec. 1, 1974, and was promoted to captain March 1, 1987. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a member of the First General Baptist Church and the Elks Lodge. He graduated from Cape Girardeau Central High School.

Survivors are his father and stepmother, Lloyd and Winifred Carlton of Jackson; his wife of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Laurie Needham and Jennifer Carlton, both of Cape Girardeau; a brother, Ike Carlton of Cape Girardeau; and a sister, Mary Ann Clarke of Belton.

His mother died Oct. 16, 1990.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Chapel. A firefighter's service will be at 6 p.m. and an Elks service will be at 7 p.m. at the chapel.

Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the chapel, with the Rev. David Griesemer officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery.

The family of Michael Carlton requests that donations be made to the First General Baptist Church Memorial Funds.
