Melvin A. Pohlman, 92, of Jackson passed away Monday, July 29, 2019, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

Melvin was born May 3, 1927, in northern Cape Girardeau County to Fred and Cora Ruppel Pohlman. He and Mildred Roth were married Jan. 25, 1951, in Blytheville, Arkansas. They had been married 61 years when Mildred passed away July 18, 2012.

Melvin was baptized May 29, 1927, and confirmed March 17, 1940, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Friedheim. He attended Perryville High School. Melvin enlisted in the U.S. Army on June 12, 1951, and was honorably discharged May 14, 1953, at the rank of corporal. He was awarded three Bronze Star medals and the United Nations Service Medal. He was a former member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Jackson and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 158 in Jackson and was a former member of VFW Post No. 3838 in Cape Girardeau. Melvin was a truck driver for many years, and after retiring he drove a school bus for Immaculate Conception Catholic School and St. Paul Lutheran School in Jackson.

Loving survivors include two sons, Kenny and Steve (Peggy) Pohlman, both of Jackson; two granddaughters, Michelle (Dwayne) Chapman of Paris, Missouri, and Angie McIntire of Jackson; six great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a brother, Delmar Pohlman, and two sisters, Erna Shell and Elda Kutscher.

Visitation starts at 4 p.m. today at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson. At 7:30 p.m. today, guests are invited to join the family for the observance of an American Legion Honor Guard Service.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Douglas Breite officiating. Burial and graveside military rites will follow at Russell Heights Cemetery in Jackson.

Memorial contributions may be made to Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
