BARNHART, Mo. -- Melvin E. Lewis, 87, of Chaffee, Mo., formerly of Barnhart, passed away Sunday, April 14, 2013, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau.
He was born Oct. 29, 1925, in Puxico, Mo., to the late David and Frona Brewer Lewis. He and Virginia M. Duncan were married April 10, 1948. She preceded him in death May 30, 2010.
Melvin was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was a retired welder at Hussmann Refrigeration in Bridgeton, Mo.
Survivors include three sons, James E. (Sharon) Lewis of Park Hills, Mo., Robert D. (Debbie) Lewis of Chaffee and Richard D. (Denise) Lewis of Imperial, Mo.; a daughter, Barbara A. Lewis of De Soto, Mo.; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, two brothers and two sisters.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service Thursday at Chaffee General Baptist Church.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church, with the Rev. Bob Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield, with full military honors presented by Missouri Honor Guard.
