FRUITLAND, Mo. -- P. Melvin Leimer, 90, of Burlington, Iowa, died Friday, Sept. 15, 2000, in Burlington.
He was born Nov. 3, 1909, in Fruitland, Mo., son of Theodore and Bertha Pfeiffer Leimer. He and Margaret Lang were married June 5, 1938, in Zion M.E. Church at Old Appleton, Mo. She died Jan. 19, 2000.
Leimer graduated from Jackson High School in 1923. He received a bachelor's degree in education from Southeast Missouri University and a master's degree from the University of Missouri in 1939.
Leimer taught in rural schools for six years to fund his baccalaureate degree. He obtained his first high school position in 1939 at Perryville, Mo.
In 1950, he accepted a high school science teaching position in Keokuk, Iowa, and moved on to a college science position at Southeastern Community College in Keokuk in 1953. In 1970, he accepted a science position at the north campus of SCC in Burlington, from which he retired in 1993.
Leimer served on various SCC committees. In 1987, he was honored as grand marshal at the East Perry Fair, of which two years, he was chairman.
He received the Burlington Faculty Achievement award in May 1991, and he served as president of the Keokuk Education Association and the SCC Teacher Association of the North Campus.
He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, where he served as president of the church council for two years and taught the adult forum for 15 years.
Survivors include two sons, Gerald Leimer of St. Paul, Minn., and Donald Leimer of Los Angeles; one daughter, Nancy Kuebler of Minnetonka, Minn.; two sisters, Irma Kasten of Jackson, Mo., and Nelda Ludwig of Pocahontas, Mo.; three brothers, Ervin Leimer of St. Louis, Tilman Leimer of Jackson and Wilmer Leimer of Perryville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
Friends may call from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Tuesday and from 8 a.m. until the time of service Wednesday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Messiah Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Donald Hoornstra officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
