Melvin L. Guemmer, 61, 2732 Oakshire, died unexpectedly Monday, July 26, 1993, at his home. He was born Feb. 6, 1932, in Perry County, son of Leonard and Alda Farrar Guemmer. He and Betty Wunderlich were married May 16, 1954, in Cape Girardeau. Survivors include his wife; his mother of Perryville; two sons, Steven Guemmer of Farmington, David Guemmer of DeSoto; two daughters, Corby Newsom of St. Louis, Leigh Rampley of Poplar Bluff, and 12 grandchildren...

Melvin L. Guemmer, 61, 2732 Oakshire, died unexpectedly Monday, July 26, 1993, at his home.

He was born Feb. 6, 1932, in Perry County, son of Leonard and Alda Farrar Guemmer. He and Betty Wunderlich were married May 16, 1954, in Cape Girardeau.

Survivors include his wife; his mother of Perryville; two sons, Steven Guemmer of Farmington, David Guemmer of DeSoto; two daughters, Corby Newsom of St. Louis, Leigh Rampley of Poplar Bluff, and 12 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother.

He was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Chapel.

Guemmer played football and baseball at Perryville High School. He was a starting center on the Southeast Missouri State University football team three years.

He was also a member of ROTC at the university, and had a master's degree in administration.

He served as a football coach at Jackson, Houston and DeSoto before going to Fulton with the Missouri Extension Service.

He later served as assistant principal at Fulton High School, was principal at Ste. Genevieve High School eight years before returning to DeSoto as principal and transportation director at the school.

He served on the Missouri State Student Council Committee 25 years.

He was a high school referee, officiating baseball, basketball, volleyball and football games. He retired in 1990 and moved to Cape Girardeau.

Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mt. Auburn Chapel, with the Rev. William Matzat officiating. Entombment will be in Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Friends may call at the funeral home today from 4 to 8 p.m.
