NEW HAMBURG, Mo. — Melvin Leon Glastetter, 86, of New Hamburg died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, at his home.
Melvin was born Sept. 4, 1937, in New Hamburg to Bernard "Barney" and Anna Westrich Glastetter. He married Cecilia Martha Landewee on April 30, 1960, in Leopold, Missouri. Cecilia survives at their home.
Melvin attended St. Lawrence Catholic School in New Hamburg from first through eighth grades. He started his career by working with his father, Barney, doing carpenter work. He later became a self-employed carpenter, working with his sons. He had a very successful career, working from 1953 to 2016 and building more than 150 new homes and barns, in addition to some remodel work.
He liked to slip away on weekends and go to auctions when he wasn't working or gardening. He enjoyed buying day-old calves and bottle feeding them, along with raising hogs to butcher. Planting and caring for large gardens and a truck patch of corn and vegetables kept him busy from spring to fall. When he had a chance, he liked to play cards, especially euchre, with his buddies at Schindler's Tavern in New Hamburg on Friday nights. He also liked to play cards with family during holidays and on Sundays.
He was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in New Hamburg, St. Joseph Sodality and Knights of Columbus.
Other survivors include four sons, Daniel J. (Connie) Glastetter and David W. (Dayneen) Glastetter, both of Chaffee, Missouri, Matthew "Tim" (Linda) Glastetter of Benton, Missouri, and Melvin "Ray" (Stacy) Glastetter of Millersville; daughter, Janel (John) Juergensmeyer of Westphalia, Missouri; brother, Mike (Debbie) Glastetter of New Hamburg; sister, Victoria (James) Eftink of Oran, Missouri; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Melvin was preceded in death by his father and mother, Bernard and Anna Glastetter; brother-in-law, Bill Chapman; sister and brother-in-law, Rose "Tootie" and Norman Blattel; two brothers, Calvin and Virgil Glastetter; and grandson, Wyatt Glastetter.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 13, in St. Lawrence Parish Center in New Hamburg.
