Mary Torbet

Mary J. Torbet, 87, of Jackson, formerly of Marble Hill, Mo., passed away Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at her home.

She was born May 5, 1924, in Peru, Iowa, daughter of Vera Hoover. She and Kenneth Torbet were married Oct. 13, 1942, in Grant City, Mo.

Mary graduated from Peru High School a few weeks after her 15th birthday. She was a member of Cape County Cowboy Church. She enjoyed listening to her son, Chris, play drums for the Southern Brothers every Sunday. Mary was the agent 17 years for her sons' former band, The Good Vibrations. She loved to fish, shop and follow her stocks online. But most of all she was proud of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, of which she was affectionately known as "Grandma-great." Her greatest joy came when her entire family gathered together for the holidays.

Loving survivors include her husband of 69 years; four children, Sharon (Ron) Stroder of Jackson, Steve (Brenda) Torbet of Sikeston, Mo., Mike (Carolyn) Torbet of Jackson and Chris (Sandy) Torbet of Oak Ridge; nine grandchildren, Ron R. (Laura Walz) Stroder, Lisa Statler and Angie Fields of Jackson, David (Angie) Torbet and Matt Torbet of Cape Girardeau, Tracy Meyr of St. Louis, Lindsay (Rennard) Roark of Marble Hill, Bradley (Jeana) Warner and Chauntel (Johnathon) Knudson of Jackson; 18 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter due in April.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Ken Hoover.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the chapel of McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Matthews officiating. Interment will be in the Missouri State Veterans Cemetery at Bloomfield.

The family suggests memorials be made to Southeast Hospice.
