QUINCY, Ill. -- The matriarch of a prominent Quincy family was killed Friday, Oct. 16, 1998, in a two-vehicle accident at the junction of U.S. 24 and Ill. 96 in Adams County.
Mary Ellen Hutter, 78, 3514 The Courts of Westview, Quincy, the driver of one of the vehicles, died from injuries sustained in an accident that occurred at 11:51 a.m. She was taken to Blessing Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 2:50 p.m.
The Hutter family is well known for its community involvement. On Thursday, Mrs. Hutter and family received Quincy University's Christian Borstadt Award.
The award honors a community individual, organization or institution for outstanding contributions and service to the university. The Hutters were commemorated for the many hours and dollars they have given to QU.
Mary Ellen Hutter and her husband, Wally, moved to Quincy in 1940. In 1954, the couple founded the Wally Hutter Oil Co., a major gasoline supplier serving Quincy and the surrounding area. Mr. Hutter died Oct. 20, 1978.
She was born July 4, 1920, in Barry, Ill., a daughter of Byron and Daisy Penny Campbell. She married Wallace Leo "Wally" Hutter on Oct. 11, 1940, in Palmyra, Mo.
She was a graduate of Barry High School and Stephens College, Columbia, Mo., and she also took courses at Quincy University. She was an officer of the Wally Hutter Oil Co.
She was a member of Vermont Street United Methodist Church where she served on the board. She served on the boards of Cheerful Home, Visiting Nursing Service, Civic Music Association, Madison School PTA, and Blessing Foundation. She was a member of EC, P.E.O, and former president.
Survivors include three children, Mrs. Richard (Ellen) Brandom, Sikeston, Mo., Mary Schardon, Quincy, Rob Hutter and his wife, Deborah, Quincy; and four grandchildren, Mary Ellen Brandom, Quincy, Mark Brandom, Columbia, Mo., Nicole Schardon, Quincy, and Megann Yakle, Quincy.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Vermont Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Earl Renshaw.
Visitation will be Monday evening from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Hansen-Spear Funeral Home. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park. Memorials may be given to the Quincy University Hutter Scholarship Fund, Blessing Foundation, Cheerful Home Building Fund or Chaddock School.
