She was born July 7, 1937, in Portageville, Missouri, to Robert and Matlean Lawson McElyea.

Mary was a 1954 graduate of Oran (Missouri) High School. In 1956, she married Robert "Bob" Dean Dumey, and they had two daughters, Karen and Shirlie.

When they were first married, they lived in Rockview, Missouri. A few years later, they moved to Chicago, where Mary helped Bob manage an apartment building throughout the 1950s and 1960s. In 1967, Mary and Bob opened a Dixie Cream doughnut shop in Boulder, Colorado. They relocated to Jackson in 1969. At that time, Mary raised her daughters, while Bob traveled around the country with his job with Dixie Cream. In 1972, Mary and Bob opened and operated Bob's Donuts in Jackson until they sold it in the late 1970s. That is when Mary began working in the office of Lenco Inc. in Jackson, where she was in charge of customer relations.

While she was healthy, Mary was an active member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jackson. She served on the parish council, was a member of St. Anne's Sodality and helped with bereavement meals.
