DONGOLA, Ill. -- Marvin B. Howell, of Dongola, celebrated his 88th birthday with his savior Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, at the Illinois Veterans Home in Anna, Ill.
Marvin was born Feb. 12, 1920 to William and Edna Howell in Goreville, Ill.
He attended school in Anna. Marvin served his country from 1942 through 1945 in the 38th Calvary Reconnaissance Troop Mechanized and was awarded several medals including the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star. He was known on the bluegrass festival circuit as the man who knew more songs than anyone else.
Marvin married Opal Owens on June 28, 1943, in Charleston, Mo., and she preceded him in death Feb. 25, 2006.
He is survived by a daughter, Carmen Brown and husband Michael of Cordova, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Mandy Pittman and husband Justin of Minneapolis; a grandson, Michael Donn Brown II of Cordova; a sister, Golda Brown of Anna; four nieces; seven nephews; and a loving church family at Landmark Pentecostal Church.
His parents, his wife, a son, Jack, a granddaughter, Hillary, a brother and four sisters preceded Marvin in death.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Landmark Pentecostal Church in Anna with Michael Brown and Derick Cummins officiating.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro, Ill.
Burial will be in Dongola American Legion Cemetery. Carroll P. Foster Post 3455 Anna VFW will conduct military rites at the graveside.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to Landmark Pentecostal Church.
Rendleman and Hileman Funeral Home in Jonesboro is in charge of arrangements.
