Martin Ray Sorenson, 72, of Jackson peacefully passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at his home, surrounded by members of his family. Martin Ray Sorenson, 72, of Jackson peacefully passed away Tuesday, June 28, 2016, at his home, surrounded by members of his family.

He was born Nov. 2, 1943, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, son of Harvey John and Barbara Helen Ness Sorenson.

Martin was a U.S. Air Force veteran, honorably discharged as captain in 1971 after serving four years.

Martin was a graduate of S.R. Butler High School in Huntsville, Alabama, and a graduate of Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. He received a master's degree from Saint Louis University.

He was the chief financial officer of Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Festus, Missouri, for 20 years and a former active member of Healthcare Financial Management Association, serving as past president.

After retirement, he enjoyed working part-time at Primo Vino in Cape Girardeau. He loved Auburn football and was a lifelong, avid fan of Cardinal baseball.

Loving survivors include two daughters, Alison (Greg) Staggs of Jackson and Kristi (Dan) Lanford of Mobile, Alabama; a son, John Martin Sorenson of Madison, Alabama; two sisters, Margaret (Alan) Payne of Pulaski, Tennessee, and Mary Welch of Goodsprings, Tennessee; and a former wife, Margaret Sorenson of Fairhope, Alabama.

Also surviving are six grandchildren, Matthew and Gabriel Staggs of Jackson and Caleb, Ellen, Benjamin and Lydia Lanford, all of Mobile.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday at McCombs Funeral Home and Cremation Center in Jackson.

A memorial service will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with Pastor Jeff Moran officiating. Inurnment will occur at a later date in Nashville National Cemetery in Nashville, Tennessee.
