Marilyn Jane Volkerding, 90, of Cape Girardeau passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at Chateau Girardeau.

She was born Dec. 15, 1933, in Syracuse, Kansas, to Charles Burton and Anna Ruth Jones Wheeler. She was raised in the Peace Creek community of Western Reno County, Kansas. She graduated from Sylvia (Kansas) Rural High School and Hutchinson (Kansas) Junior College.

She and Richard W. Volkerding were married April 2, 1953, at Cape Girardeau. He preceded her in death Oct. 13, 2023.

In 1969, Jane graduated from Southeast Missouri State University, obtaining a bachelor's degree in elementary education. She taught first and third grades at Jefferson Elementary School 18 years.

She was a charter member and first president of Girardeau Rose Chapter of Sweet Adelines Inc.

Jane was a Christian and a member of Cape Girardeau Church of Christ.

She loved to cook and bake. While she was still able every year at Christmas time, she would ask children and grandchildren what kinds of treats they would like. She never disappointed, and everyone enjoyed. Family members oftentimes tried to duplicate her recipes. They were always good, but not quite like Jane's. Her chocolate chip cookie recipe was a little bit of this and little bit of that. We will miss her so much.
