Marilyn Jane "Babe" Obermann, 77, left this world Sunday, March 5, 2017, to be with her Lord and Savior. She departed, following a short illness, at Saint Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau.
She was born Oct. 30, 1939, in Randles to Vester "Bud" and Sadie (Thomas) Huffman.
In 1957, Marilyn was salutatorian at Illmo-Fornfelt (Scott City) High School. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church since 1957. She married Russell Obermann on Feb. 15, 1958; he died Aug. 2, 1995.
She was a farmer's wife, mother and homemaker in her early years and later was employed by Drury Industries for 23 years. One of her dreams was to build a new home. Her dream came true in 1999, when she replaced the 100-plus-year-old farmhouse on the same spot where they raised their children. This location is fondly known by the family as "Obermann Mountain."
Her hobbies in her younger years were roller skating, bingo with a girlfriend and bowling, having played on several leagues. After her retirement, Marilyn loved watching the "The Bold and the Beautiful," knitting, crocheting and sewing, especially for her great-grandchildren, Mayah and Leonorah Gerecke, plus Zion, Orli and Noah Gerecke.
Survivors include three children, Sherri Gerecke of Branson, Missouri, Doug Obermann (Roger Dawson) of Kansas City, Missouri, and Steve (Tammy) Obermann of Cape Girardeau. Her surviving siblings include Carolyn Schott of Ste. Genevieve, Missouri (affectionately known to Marilyn as "Caroline," and Carolyn affectionately called her sister "Maryland"); a brother, Larry (Jeanie) Huffman of Murphysboro, Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Gloria Barringer of Scott City and Judy Ross of Tucson, Arizona; four grandchildren, Ryan (Holly) Gerecke, Kyle (Bethany) Gerecke, Rhett Obermann and Regan Obermann; plus the great-grandchildren listed above; nieces; nephews; other relatives; and many friends. She loved them all dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and three brothers, Robert, Jerry and Charles Huffman.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Gordonville, followed by interment in the church's cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Saint Jude Children's Hospital or to the Zion Lutheran Church building fund (176 County Rd. 226, Cape Girardeau, MO 63701).
