SIKESTON, Mo. -- Marilyn Lucille Grant, 78, of Sikeston died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2015, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis.
She was born Feb. 9, 1937, in Sikeston, daughter of Elmer Eugene and Erma Elmore Grant.
A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Marilyn taught high-school English in Brentwood, Missouri, as well as at Sikeston High School. She also served as a librarian at Charleston Public Library and for the Scott City Public Schools.
She was active many years in the Sikeston Community Choir, singing alto and sometimes tenor. Marilyn was a member of Sikeston High School graduating class of 1955 and helped organize many reunions.
In addition to literature, she loved history, especially the history of Sikeston. She donated her time, sharp mind and humor, sharing family heirlooms and personal stories and volunteering countless hours by leading tours at the Sikeston Depot to "teach others about this cotton-pickin' town."
"Mimi," as she was known to the family, is survived by two nephews, E.E. "Chuck" Grant III and wife Joan of Sikeston and Gary Mackley Grant of St. Louis; two great-nephews, E.E. "Chip" Grant IV and husband John Patrick Fogarty Moore of San Francisco and Bart Allen Grant and wife Angela of Sikeston; a great-great-nephew, Cooper Allen Grant; and a great-great-niece, Olivia Claire Grant of Sikeston.
She also is survived by a sister-in-law, Margie Pease Grant of Benton, Missouri; four great-nieces, Gale Bohannon and husband Jeffrey Bohannon and Missy Kraft and husband Tim of Scott City and Kay Pease-Smith and husband John Smith, Leigh Ann Keen and Jason Keen of Benton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Elmer E. "Gene" Grant Jr., Sherman E. Grant, Glen Russell "Bill" Grant, and Donald L. "Don" Grant.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ponder Funeral Home.
Burial and commendation service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 1010 North Main Street, Sikeston. A reception and light lunch will be served in St. Paul's parish hall following the service. The committal service will be at Cape County Memorial Park in Cape Girardeau.
