Mae W. Sherwood, 72, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital. She was born Nov. 3, 1936, in Hayti, Mo., daughter of Robert and Bernice Cooper Banks. She and Donald Sherwood were married Aug. 22, 1959. She was a graduate of Central High School in Hayti and of Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. ...

Mae W. Sherwood, 72, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, Nov. 20, 2008, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

She was born Nov. 3, 1936, in Hayti, Mo., daughter of Robert and Bernice Cooper Banks. She and Donald Sherwood were married Aug. 22, 1959.

She was a graduate of Central High School in Hayti and of Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo. She also attended Southeast Missouri State University for hours toward her master's degree in elementary education. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Society, Central Star No. 114 Order of the Eastern Star in Hayti and a member of St. James AME Church in Cape Girardeau, where she served on the Historical Society.

Survivors include her husband; a sister, Erma Jean Palmer of St. Louis; and an aunt, Mildred Cooper of Hayti.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son.

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at St. James AME Church.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church, with the Rev. Debbie Thornton officiating. Interment will be in Fairmount Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.

Williams Funeral Home of Charleston, Mo., in charge of arrangements.
