On Aug. 4, 1984, in Sikeston, he married Cindy Vowels, who survives of the home.
He was a graduate of Sikeston High School and attended the University of Missouri at Columbia and Westminster at Fulton for two years. He had been employed at the Sikeston Power Plant until 1995, when he purchased the Play It Again Sports franchise in Cape Girardeau, which he continued to own and operate.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, and a very active member of the Sikeston Jaycees. At this year's Rodeo, he was honored for his many years of service to the organization.
He was instrumental in starting and coaching the Sikeston Church League Basketball Program. In addition, he also coached Little League football, baseball and soccer teams.
Survivors, in addition to his wife, include two sons, Clayton Mayfield and Matthew Mayfield, both of the home; one brother, Dr. Loomis Mayfield III of Chicago; seven sisters and six brothers-in-law, Mary and Dan Seyer of Cape Girardeau, Beth and Phil Tidwell, Sandra and William M. Sharp and Suzanne and Doug Shaw, all of Sikeston, Barbara Morris of Walls, Miss., Christina and Stephen Taylor of Montgomery, Ala., and Gloria and Jay Holland of Dallas.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16, at the Ponder Funeral Home in Sikeston. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Jim Davis, pastor, and Pastor Sandra Shaller, associate pastor, co-officiating.
Interment will follow in Sikeston City Cemetery.
