When he was 17 years old, he left home to join the United States Marine Corp. He spent eight years in the Marines touring lots of different countries. Lyle was honorably discharged on medical after being seriously injured and spent months and months in the hospital. "Once a Marine, always a Marine" was definitely his motto. He was very proud of his country and ALWAYS wore a Marine cap. On numerous occasions, if a person was flying a badly worn American flag, he would take them a new one and take the old one to be disposed of properly.

Lyle spent most of his life working as an apartment maintenance supervisor. There was very little that he could not fix.
