Lowery B. Miller, 83, of Cape Girardeau died Saturday, Oct. 31, 1992, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.
He was born Dec. 13, 1908 at Springerton, Ill., the son of Sylvester G. and Ella Seifried Miller. On Oct. 10, 1946, he married Flora Pensel at Sikeston. She survives of the home.
A long-time Cape Girardeau businessman, he and Gene Sides opened the Sides-Miller Men's Store on Broadway in 1947, which he co-owned and operated until his retirement in 1972. He graduated Cape Central High School in 1928 and Southeast Missouri State University in 1932, where he participated in sports.
In 1935, he and the late Walter "Doc" Ford pioneered double officiating in Southeast Missouri, working games in the "Lead Belt" area of Missouri to the Arkansas line for many years.
From 1936-42, he was a lifeguard at the Cape Girardeau municipal swimming pool. He also taught at May Greene School and at Central Junior High School from 1933 to 1942.
He served in the South Pacific during World War II as a member of the U.S. Navy. He was a member of the Cape Girardeau Jaycees, the American Legion, Trinity Lutheran Church, and was a past president of the Evening Optimist Club in Cape. He also was an avid golfer late in life.
Other survivors include a son, Mike B. Miller of Evansville, Ill., and a daughter, Diana Rosenstein of Clemson, S.C.. He was preceded in death by a brother and three sisters.
Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mt. Aubrn Chapel, where funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday. The Rev. David Dissen will officiate, and burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Cape Girardeau.
