Loverne John Lindner, 85, of Oak Ridge died Thursday, June 4, 2009, at Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.

He was born April 18, 1924, in Lennox, S.D., son of John the Baptist and Mary Helen Koechner Lindner. He and Mary Landers were married Nov. 7, 1949. She died May 20, 2002.

Lindner served with the U.S. Army's 10th Mountain Division in Italy during World War II. He received the Silver and Bronze Stars at the Battle of Apennines and Po Valley, and the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars.

He was a graduate of Bell City High School and received a degree in agriculture from Arkansas State University.

Lindner farmed in the Advance, Mo., and Oak Ridge communities, and was a deckhand 17 years on the Mississippi River with Cargill. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and life member of Altenthal-Joerns American Legion Post 158 and DAV. He received the Missouri Medal of Honor in 2001 for his service in World War II.

Survivors include a son, Jerome L. Lindner of Oak Ridge; five daughters, Virginia A. Harrison, Mary F. Steele of Jackson, Helen M. Benoit of Rolla, Mo., Margaret K. Lindner of Oak Ridge, Theresa D. Berry of Pocahontas; three brothers, Jerome Lindner of Greensboro, N.C., Ralph Lindner of Nancy, Ky., Marvin Lindner of San Diego; three sisters, Anna Marie Followell and Dorothy Hohler of Kalamazoo, Mich., Florence Patterson of St. Louis; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, three brothers and a sister.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson. Parish prayers will be at 7.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church, with the Rev. Jeff Fasching officiating. Burial will be in Russell Heights Cemetery with full military honors to be provided.

Memorials may be made to Missouri Veterans Home in Cape Girardeau.
