Thebes, Ill. -- Louise B. Benefield Matlock, 83, of Thebes died Saturday, July 16, 2005, at her home.
She was born Sept. 17, 1921, in McClure, Ill., daughter of Clarence and Bertha J. Phillips Benefield. She and John Henry Matlock were married Sept. 13, 1941, in Cape Girardeau. He died Jan. 31, 1992.
Matlock was employed at the Florsheim Shoe Factory for 26 years. She was a founder and trustee of the Church of God in Gale, Ill. She taught Sunday school and led the Sunday services. Mr. and Mrs. Matlock gave time and monetary assistance to the Church of God in Hagerstown, Md.
Survivors include a son, Johnnie Carroll, husband of Mary Elizabeth Matlock, of McClure; a daughter, Diana Sue, wife of Charlie Protomaster, of Conifer, Co.; four brothers, Paul Benefield, Earl Benefield, and Lawrence Benefield, all of Thebes, and Bill Benefield of Cape Girardeau; three sisters, Virginia Schearf of Cape Girardeau, Clara May Tucker of McClure, and Alice Marie Green of Scott City, Mo.; four grandsons, Troy Matlock, husband of Stacey, of McClure, Joey Matlock, husband of Leslie, of Tamms, Ill., and David and Dean Stoffel, both of McClure; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
Friends may call from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel in Cape Girardeau.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel, with the Rev. Junior Trisler officiating. Burial will be at Lindsey Cemetery in McClure.
